💰 First-year budget tip

Plan for 3–6 months of living costs in reserve. Credit history takes time to build — start a secured card early.

🏦 Banking on arrival

Open an account within days of landing. Most big banks offer newcomer packages with no monthly fees for a year.

🏠 Renting as a newcomer

Without a rental history, expect to show proof of funds or pay first-and-last. Landlord reference letters help.

Quality of life

Six reasons it just works

Universal healthcare

Doctors, hospitals and emergency care are publicly funded — no bills at the bedside.

Education that's free

Public schooling is free for residents, and Canadian universities rank among the world's best.

Fair taxes

Progressive income tax funds public services. Effective rates for families are among the OECD's most balanced.

Four real seasons

From cherry blossoms to fall colours to deep, bright winters — every season has its own magic.

Safety first

Violent crime is low and communities are close-knit — consistently ranked a top-5 safest country.

Culture of welcome

Multiculturalism is official policy. Over 450 ethnic origins and a quarter of Canadians are newcomers.
